Mono printing on foil experimenting with collage techniques with metallic paper.
Experimenting with metallic surfaces using mono printing techniques with oil paint.
I have always liked the combination of black and silver and was interested in experimenting with this.
You can use genuine silver leaf which isn't that expensive but it is worth trying with something a little cheaper to practice with first. In this demo I use a foil wrapping paper that has a plastic foil side and the reverse is paper. This is easy to use with PVA glue and will not peel off when stuck down. This mono print will take longer to dry out completely because the oil paint does not adhere to the surface of the foil in the same way as paper. You can use this slow drying time to add more texture effects. I would leave aside to dry completely for about a week.
CHAPTERS (you can use the time stamps to skip through these sections)
0:00 Begin with some 200gsm smooth card, the frame template is simple to make from scrap card and parcel tape, use masking tape to fix down.
0:49 Foil wrapping paper is used here, this has a plastic metallic side but the reverse is paper, it can't be torn so you will need to use scissors or a craft knife. You could also use tin foil for this.
1:00 I am working with random abstract shapes here but you could draw these out first and experiment with different compositions.
1:15 PVA glue, depending on the type of foil you are using you will need to try different types of glue. PVA is good to use for paper backed foil like this but it will not work with plastic. Use plenty of glue and apply firm pressure to fix to the paper.
4:39 Paint transfer method using a piece of recycled plastic as a transfer sheet. I have used this in many of my previous demos and it is a simple technique to try, you can use any type of thin plastic and use many times. Use a plastic pallet knife or soft brush to spread the paint so you do not damage the sheet.
4:45 Winsor & Newton Winton series oil paint (Ivory Black) Spread the paint thinly on the sheet and use a little to begin with, you will add more layers later.
5:42 Torn newspaper is used to create masks, these can be random and quite abstract or you could draw these out and cut with scissors to be more precise.
6:35 Applying the paint, use light but firm pressure on the paint transfer sheet, use your fingertips or nails to add variety to the marks.
7:43 A cocktail can be used to add fine lines, don't press too hard or you will pierce the transfer sheet.
8:31 Use a soft dry paper towel or rag to blend the oil paint and create soft tonal areas. Don't overwork this stage and keep areas free from paint.
9:06 Repeat the process and add some more paint with the transfer sheet.
9:31 Try using a cotton bud to remove paint from the foil areas, this can add some interesting textures.
10:23 Use the pallet knife to add marks directly to the paper.
10:44 Add more masks using torn newspaper before applying oil paint using the plastic transfer sheet.
12:10 Press firmly with a cotton bud to create thicker lines on the surface of the foil sections.
13:44 The Finished mono print.
