How did Mad-Eye Moody die in the books? During the flight of the Seven Potters, Voldemort fired a Killing Curse when he thought Harry would be flying with the most powerful wizard there. Fletcher Mundungus panicked and Disapparated, leaving Moody vulnerable to attack. The curse hit Moody in the face, killing him. Moody fell backward off his broom about a thousand feet to the ground.
