[ Ссылка ] The European Court of Justice has ruled that Hungary's decision to lower the retirement age of judges from 70 to 62 years is illegal.
The Luxembourg-based institution announced on Tuesday that the law violates equal treatment rules in the EU. The complaint was originally filed in April by the European Commission.
The legislation passed by Viktor Orban's conservative government was also criticised by Hungary's opposition, which sees it as a ploy by the government to control the judiciary.
The Hungarian Ministry of Justice announced that it had taken note of the judgment but if Budapest doesn't back down immediately, Brussels is likely to impose economic sanctions.
