A 1x1 rib stitch is a great knitting pattern for hems, hats and other garments that need a little stretchy extra. It's quite easy to knit and perfect for knitting beginners.
All you have to do is alternate knit and purl stitch across all rows. You only have to take care that you cast on an even number of stitches.
The repeat is:
Row 1: *k1,p1*
Row 2: *k2,p1*

For an odd number of stitches, the repeat looks like this:
Row 1: *k1,p1*,k1
Row 2: p1,*k1,p1*
The standard long-tail cast-on is great for the 1x1 rib stitch. You can create an extra neat edge if you alternate between knit and purl cast-on stitches.
If you want to decrease stitches, then do so by using the k2tog. Start with a purl stitch - that's the most invisible way to do so.
