In 1999, the SFMTA finalized a deal with ETI in which 240 buses would be built. These buses were based upon the Skoda 14Tr, a very widely used trolleybus in Europe, most notable the Czech Republic. These buses were put into service in 2001, replacing the aging Flyer E800 buses which had populated San Francisco's trolley bus lines from 1976-2007.
In 2019, the 14TrSF type buses were taken out of service. One was preserved, 5538.
