In the Lord of the Rings, The Army of the Dead, known as the Dead Men of Dunharrow or Oathbreakers, were Men from the White Mountains who were cursed to remain in Middle-earth by Isildur after they failed to aid him in the War of the Last Alliance. They lurked in the caverns beneath Dwimorberg and the valley of Harrowdale that lay under its shadow, only emerging during times of trouble or death. The King of the Dead led them, and because Isildur's line was believed to have ended, no one could call upon them for aid except for an Heir of Isildur.
According to Malbeth the Seer's prophecy, a day would come when one of Isildur's heirs would be driven by need and haste to take The Road under the Mountain, and the dead would respond to their call. This prediction came true during the War of the Ring when Aragorn, Isildur's heir, summoned the Dead Men to the Stone of Erech. Aragorn instructed them to fulfill their oath and gain their freedom.
