How to use a $15 cutting board and an hour of easy DIY to keep your $350 Kove 450 Rally's carbon fiber skid plate looking so fresh and so clean. YES the stock skidplate works fine and has held up to a beating, but it's certainly not meant for the kind of punishment I have been throwing at this bike so far. I saw a cutting board skidplate on my friend Erik's WR250R and thought it would be a super simple mod for the Kove to add a little extra protection.
Tools and materials:
You can pick up this 16" x 20" cutting board at Wal Mart for $15 and it fits PERFECTLY. You'll need to make one bend, drill six holes in it, and cut two corners off to match the back half of the Kove's stock skid plate and allow the kickstand to come all the way down. Additionally, you can scoot the cutting board up towards the front of the bike and not have to cut off the corners. This will actually give you a little more protection in the front.
Heat Gun
Drill with 1/4" bit
Four m6 bolts and fender washers to attach the skid plate to the Kove
A long, thin, flat piece of aluminum (I got mine from an old knee brace)
Two m6 bolts to attach the aluminum support to the frame and the cutting board
