There is no evidence that the July 2021 unrest was sparked by former president Jacob Zuma going to jail for contempt of court.
That's according to reports by both the Human Rights Commission and the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Rights.
The two Chapter 9 bodies carried out investigative work into specific issues following the unrest that occurred in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
The unrest came at a huge cost to the economy and social well-being of South Africa.
More than 350 people lost their lives.
