In this video I will be modifying a Squire Bullet Stratocaster. My inspiration for this build was a YouTube video by The Trogly’s Guitar Show featuring a 1990’s Nylon strung Fender Stratocaster. He featured another YouTuber’s video, named Ben Wood, the Spanish guitar player. Ben Wood was the seller. I like playing classical guitars, I’m not necessarily skilled in that style, but I like the way they feel and the way the boom for a small guitar. So instantly I wanted to have something similar.
Originally I was going to build a guitar from a kit, I really wanted to do a mahogany S-style with natural finish. But as I was ordering parts and my build was getting more and more expensive. I wanted to stay under $350, but unfortunately I did not have many guitar specific tools, so with the tools I was buying my budget was blown pretty fast. So to save on some cost I ended up ordering a Squire Bullet Strat, straight from Fender. I figured I would save on the cost of wood finishing materials and of course many hours of labor. I also didn’t want to bite off more than I could chew. I expected the fret work to be bad on the Squire and knew that would be some work, and my first attempt doing a level and crown job.
Doing some research and googling “piezo saddles”, Graphtech’s Ghost saddles were the first thing to come up. Being a reputable company I ordered a set of saddles from them and their Acousti-Phonic preamp. I also installed their string trees, mainly for a match to the saddles. I modified the original nut. The pick guard was a blank strat style that I ordered from Dragonfire Guitars. For strings I’m using Ernie Ball Earthwood. I think that sums up the parts.
Ironically after I ordered my parts I learned that Ben Wood’s makes a modified strat for retail, he calls them the Nylocaster. I heard in another Trogly’s video that the picks are custom made for him and his electronics are passive. His mod is pretty clean and you should check out his site.
Here are some links to the parts and inspiration for my build. These are not affiliate links. But if someone wants to figure that out for me I would be happy to do that. Lol
