These trains were built by Metro-Cammell in 1938 for the London Transport Executive. After a full career on the London Underground they were converted in 1989 - 1990 for a second career on British Rail's Isle of Wight line which runs for 8.5 miles between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin. The 82-year-old trains, by far the oldest in normal scheduled service on the National Rail network, were withdrawn on the 3rd January 2021 having being replaced by Class 484 EMU's which are former London Underground District Line trains converted by Vivarail.
