In 2006, Israel invaded and occupied parts of Southern Lebanon in response to the attacks carried out by Hezbollah forces. Hezbollah, a US-designated terrorist organization, had fired rockets at Israel and attacked IDF armored vehicles, taking two Israeli soldiers hostage. Israeli forces refused to negotiate for prisoner exchanges and utilized airstrikes and artillery on Hezbollah and Lebanese targets. As the fighting grew more violent, hundreds of Americans were evacuated. Behind this massive evacuation were the efforts of American foreign service officers who tirelessly worked to safely extradite American citizens before any harm came to them.
ADST is an independent, non-profit organization located in Arlington, Virginia. Its goal is to collect and share the personal histories of the thousands of American diplomats who have dedicated their lives to the conduct of American foreign policy.
