Sultan Selim Yavuz was born on October 10, 1470. He was the son of Sultan Bayezid II and his wife Gulbahar Hatun. Of the three sons, Selim was the youngest son, and was not the heir to the throne.
Selim was the most energetic and warlike, so unlike his father, but very reminiscent of his grandfather the conqueror. The favorite son of Sultan Bayezid was the second son Ahmed, who was more talented in the field of government. This was the reason for the unrest and rebellion of Selim against his father.
Worried about his future and knowing that the days of the ailing Bayezid were numbered, Selim, full of determination, decided to claim the throne. He came to Istanbul, where he enlisted the support of the Janissaries, who felt contempt for Bayezid's military inactivity. He hoped for the support of these rebels, but his expectations were not met.
