📒Program Note:
No work by Leonard Bernstein is more beloved than his superb musical West Side Story. It's a masterful blend of pop sociology, bebop, Latin jazz, and a fantastic integration of dance. Opening on Broadway in 1957 and set in New York City in the Upper West Side, the story replaces Shakespeare's Montagues and Capulets with the gangs, Jets and Sharks. Tony, a former member of the American Jets has fallen in love with Maria, the sister of the Puerto Rican Sharks. The impossible and tragic situation develops against the backdrop of an impending rumble between the rival gangs, and the star-crossed lovers are caught in the crossfire. The production, directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins, marked Stephen Sondheim's Broadway debut. It ran for 732 performances before going on tour. The production was nominated for six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, in 1958, winning two. Bernstein is also known for his score to the Marlon Brando film, On the Waterfront.
