In the summer of 2017, Barn Owls nested in between round bales inside a barn in a farmyard near Fermoy in Cork. The farmer discovered three chicks when moving bales, and quickly returned the bales to make sure the nest was not disturbed. BirdWatch Ireland fitted the adult male of this pair with a lightweight GPS datalogger to learn about his movements and foraging behaviour in this intensive agricultural landscape and to assess whether this bird encountered the nearby motorway. All three chicks successfully fledged from this nest thanks to the efforts of the farmer and a nest box is now in place to provide a more suitable nest site for future years.
