The FBI arrested a Mississippi man on Wednesday in connection with sending letters initially tested positive for the poison ricin to President Barack Obama and two other US officials.
The alleged sender of the letters has been named as Paul Kevin Curtis, 45, from Corinth, Mississippi. According to Reuters, he was arrested at his home. He is considered responsible for mailing three letters addressed to Republican Senator Roger Wicker, the White House and a Mississippi justice official. The three letters were all postmarked Memphis, Tennessee, and dated 8 April and contained a granular substance that preliminarily tested positive for ricin, the Justice Department said.
The FBI said the envelope sent to Obama was received at a mail-screening facility outside the White House and was immediately quarantined.
On Tuesday evening authorities intercepted the letter sent to Republican Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi that had initially tested positive for ricin.
As Reuters reported "the letters to Obama and Wicker had identical language, included the phrase, "To see a wrong and not expose it, is to become a silent partner to its continuance." According to an FBI operations bulletin they were signed, "I am KC and I approve this message,"
The tests were being conducted at Fort Detrick, in Frederick, Maryland, a government source said.
Officials have said they don't have any reason to believe the ricin letters were in any way linked to Monday's bombings at the Boston Marathon.
