Communication and Collaboration
Communication is all about learners being able to express themselves effectively. This is a crucial life skill that is best developed in the formative years. Collaboration on the other hand is all about working well with others across shared goals. This is also a crucial life skill that makes a learner a useful member of society
Self-efficacy
Self-efficacy is all about believing in one’s own abilities to accomplish tasks and goals. A strong sense of self-efficacy breeds confident learners who go on to dare to do even greater, more challenging things in life. CBC is designed to continuously challenge learners to do things outside their comfort zone in order to explore the world and things about themselves that they never knew about.
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
This is perhaps one of the better-understood core competencies. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are absolutely essential in solving the challenges that the world is continuously throwing at us. These skills are best developed early in one’s life.
Creativity and Imagination
The late Sir. Ken Robinson once said that in this 21st century, creativity is now as important as literacy. Sir Ken Robinson also defined creativity as applied imagination. Children are naturally imaginative and the education system tends to educate it out of them. CBC proposes instead to harness the natural imaginative nature of children and put it to good use in all kinds of areas of life. Sir. Ken Robinson defines creativity as applied imagination. And that is as good as the definition of the word can get.
Citizenship
The development of our identity as Kenyans, as well as global citizens with shared heritage, is best developed in the formative years. Citizenship is a crucial core competency that makes learners realise that they are an important part of the country and the world and that their actions matter.
Digital Literacy
The 21st century is often associated with the digital era. Digital literacy is undoubtedly as crucial as being able to read and write in the world today, and this is why it is considered a core competency.
Learning to Learn
Learning to learn is arguably the main point of education. Basic education develops in learners the knowledge and skills that they shall require for a fulfilling life, but the most critical of them all is arguably the ability to continuously learn new skills. This is because the world is continuously changing and at a pace that is unlike any other time in history.
