"We came to motivate people to stop using them (donkeys and mules) as a means of transport. We all have legs; we can use them. It's an old custom but it has no place in today's world and it's time to put an end to all forms of animal exploitation."

"Tradition can never be a good reason to exploit animals. There are so many beautiful things in Greece to see the nature, the architecture and the history of Greece. It's not necessary in this day and age to exploit animals and to celebrate tradition in the way of animal abuse."

STORYLINE:
Dozens of protesters gathered in central Athens across from the parliament demanding legislation against the use of donkeys and mules as transportation means in the Greek island of Santorini and Athens.
Protesters held placards and photographs of donkeys and mules, which travellers use to get to the old town and back to the port of the Aegean Sea Island one of Greece's top tourist destinations.
They called for an end to what they call animal suffering in the picturesque island.
Speaking from the protest in Syntagma Square, PETA animal rights activist Jens Vogt said: "We have modern ways of transportation. And even on Santorini, there is a lift where people can go up and down the hill and enjoy the beauty of nature of Greece without animal exploitation".
According to PETA animal rights organisation, images from July 2022 show many animals, which travellers use to get to the old town and back to the port, with open, untreated wounds.
PETA says they presented the recent footage to horse expert Dr. Maximilian Pick, who confirms in his report the need to protect the animals.
Several other Greek organisations activists joined the protest.
