In this video i will be going through 5 of the largest freshwater fish in the world. There are many giant freshwater fish in the worlds rivers and lakes but what fish is the biggest freshwater fish in the world? This is actually a very hard question to answer as monster fish come in many different shapes and sizes and two fish from the same species can vary in size drastically from one another.

So in this video i will be going through 5 river monsters that are thought to be the largest freshwater fish in the world. I will be including sturgeon species in this video Unlike the previous 2 largest freshwater fish in the world videos.

The first giant fish on the list is the white sturgeon. This giant fish can be found in saltwater but i have decided to include this sturgeon on the list as it can live out its entire life cycle in freshwater. The white sturgeon is the largest freshwater fish in north America and is a giant predatory fish.

For our second monster fish we will be heading over Australia as we have the Murray cod. Despite its name the Murray cod is not related to the saltwater cod and is part of a small genus endemic to Australia. This large predatory fish used to reach much larger sizes than it does today but it has been severely overfished.

For our next large fish we will move over to Africa as we have the African tiger fish. The goliath tiger fish is infamous for its fearsome teeth and vicious nature. the goliath tiger fish was the first freshwater fish to be confirmed to catch and eat birds in flight. Despite how scary this fish may look it rarely attacks humans and is mainly a piscivorous predatory river monster.

For the next monster fish we will move up to the desolate Mongolia as we have the taimen. The taimen is the largest member of the salmon family and this river monster is deeply rooted in Mongolian culture as there are many myths and legends about this large fish in Mongolian history. The taimen is a prized fish for fishermen and women around the world.

For our final river monster we will be heading westward as we have the beluga sturgeon. If you search on google it will tell you that the beluga sturgeon is the largest freshwater fish in the world but I think this is slightly misleading. Juvenile beluga sturgeon can be found in freshwater but the majority of specimens are found in the Caspian and black seas. Even though the salinity of these seas is not as high as the ocean it still isn't freshwater. The beluga sturgeon is truly one of the largest fish in the world and even rivals the great white shark and greenland shark in size, making it a true river monster.
