R. Mitchell Thomas: MSW ’14, MPH ’15, Macro Practice:
“The advice I have for students coming into the program is to try and take a variety of courses. It’s a really great way to get a diverse perspective in your learning.”
Liz Dimant: MSW ’15, Clinical Practice:
“Don’t be afraid to talk to your professors, don’t be afraid to make friends, and don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself when need be.”
Anna Gribble: MSW ’15, MPH ’15, Macro Practice:
“Consider the dual degree programs. I’m a dual degree with the school of social work and the school of public health and I love it. It’s a great way of networking and it offers a lot more classes and a wide range of things to do.”
William Baerthlein: MSW ’15, Clinical Practice:
“Get involved early on because it will help you integrate into the BU community.”
Emily Dore: MSW ’15, MPH ’15, Macro Practice:
“I would just take advantage of getting to know the professors here because of their vast experience and their many years in the field. And they’re very open to getting to know you as the student.”
Erin Truex: MSW ’15, Macro Practice:
“I would really recommend people kind of find a group that they can connect with and really make connections and meet people and just recognize that these are going to be your colleagues down the road.”
Anna Gribble:
“Definitely go to the alumni events. I’ve done some great networking. It’s helped me a lot while I’m in school. The alumni are great, they will come and they will talk to you and they will give you their cards. Follow up, because they’ll follow up back with you. It’s a great opportunity for jobs in the future too - I’m hoping.”
Erin Trux:
“Be open to new experiences and really just have an open mind, I think that’s huge. And just recognizing that there is a ton of opportunities and a ton of chances to just really explore the profession.”
Liz Dimant:
“It’s funny I think every semester has brought a stand out moment for me. But I think just the moment when you’re sitting in class and listening to your professor and feel engaged and feel like you have so much that you want to say that class time isn’t going to be enough. I think that in itself was a really standout kind of feeling, knowing that you’re doing exactly what you’re supposed to be doing - what you’re meant to be doing.”
William Baerthlein:
“The benefits of your field placements are they give you an opportunity to work with new client populations and do new things that you haven’t had the chance to do before.”
Erin Truex:
“The thing about BU is they have such a strong reputation and they really get students out in the field and they prepare students to do great work.”
Anna Gribble:
“I’m a macro social worker. I chose macro social work because I’m interested in addressing social justice and large system changes. So that could be working in a hospital addressing how hospitals work with patients, or it could be social action and working for effective policies. That’s really what I wanted to do.”
Emily Dore:
“I was brought to social work - it took me a little while to decide what I wanted to do with my life. I knew the common thread with what I was choosing to do was working with people and working in some kind of helping capacity.”
Erika Gaitan: MSW ’15, Macro Practice:
“Social work to me means ‘Ubuntu: I am a person - through you, we are all interconnected.’ I think working with people and helping one another is one of the greatest purposes I have in life.”
William Baerthlein:
“I love BUSSW”
End:
“Welcome to BU! Woo!”
