What did Jesus mean when he said, "My yoke is easy, and my burden is light?"
Here is the full quote:
"Come to me, all you that are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30)
1. Come to me...
When you are overwhelmed and weary, turn to Jesus in prayer. Tell him what you want. Show him what you need. He will answer you.
2. Take my yoke upon you...
The yoke is the piece of wood placed on the necks of animals to pull a plow. These animals used to be called "beasts of burden."
When we take on the yoke of Jesus Christ, we pull his plow.
Pulling a plow should be hard work, but Jesus tells us that his yoke is easy.
You pull the plow. Jesus sows the seeds.
Turn your stress into service.
When life feels out of control, let go of the desire to control it.
You do not have control, but God does.
Give your burdens over to God. They are his burdens now.
3. ...and learn from me.
Jesus's followers are called disciples for a reason. A disciple is a student. As Christian disciples we are always learning. We never have all the answers. Jesus is the teacher. Let him teach you how to overcome your overwhelm.
Why serve and become a student?
Why take up his yoke and learn from him?
Because Jesus will give us rest for our souls. Let him take away the heavy burdens you carry. He has this under control.
But instead of "Let go and let God" say this: "Serve and learn, then let go and let God."
He wants you to want his help.
