Finnish composer Heikki Liimola (b. 1958) completed diplomas in choir conducting and the trumpet at the Sibelius Academy in 1985 and graduated with a Master of Music degree in 1988. He also studied orchestra conducting with Jorma Panula and voice with Yrjö Nykänen and Anssi Hirvonen and went on to study choir conducting with Eric Ericson in Sweden. He has taught choir conducting at the Kuopio unit of the Sibelius Academy since 1987, being appointed a full lecturer in 1995. Liimola was for a long period artistic director of the Tampere Vocal Music Festival, and he has conducted several other distinguished choirs, including the Tampere Philharmonic Choir, which he founded, from 1990 to 2004, and also the Tampere Opera Chorus and the Harju Chamber Choir. He has served as artistic director of the Klemetti Institute Chamber Choir. Liimola was nominated Choir Conductor of the Year by the Finnish Choir Directors’ Association in 1998.
