COP21 closer to agreement
A final deal at the UN’s two-week conference on climate change has been postponed until Saturday. The latest draft limits global warming to two degrees above pre-industrial levels. But it says they’ll make efforts to cap warming at 1.5 degrees. The least developed countries have been pushing for this lower limit.
Military sites attacked
A presidential official says government opposition groups attacked military sites in Bujumbura overnight. Officials say 12 attackers were killed and 20 arrested during fighting. Earlier, media reported that at least two soldiers had also been killed. And since April, at least 240 people have died in anti-government violence. Government opposition groups say President Pierre Nkurunziza’s third term in office is unconstitutional.
Rape conviction for police officer
A former Oklahoma City police officer has been convicted of raping and sexually victimising eight women. The jury found Daniel Holtzclaw guilty of 18 counts and acquitted him on another 18. All thirteen women who accused him are black. Authorities say he targeted minority women with criminal records. Holtzclaw faces 263 years in prison for the crimes.
Obesity a ‘national health risk’
England’s Chief Medical Officer, Sally Davies says the British government should treat obesity in women as a ‘national health risk.’ The risks that the UK has current plans to combat include terror, natural disasters and cyber attacks. Davies found that in 2013, more than half of women in the UK were overweight or obese - that’s compared to 66 percent of adult men. Obesity increases a person’s risk of disease such as breast cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
