A much better day today with the welding. I decided to ignore the bad job I'd done on the first pan, worry about it later, and focus on the second one. After a bit of a hesitant start I got the second pan drilled (8mm) and screwed into the spine with Tek screws to cinch everything nice and tight. Then turned up the amps and plug welded through the holes, starting on the inside and working around the rim of the hole for the best penetration of the weld. I think it worked out better this time.
I'm rebuilding and restoring this rusty 1967 VW Beetle from the ground up.
