Project Past History unscripted
Fort Frederica
Episode 21
After James Oglethorpe founded the colony of Georgia in 1733, He set out to establish an outpost on what is now St Simons Island, Georgia. This outpost would act as a buffer between the Southern English colonies and Spanish controlled Florida. At it's height, Fort Frederica had about 630 British soldiers stationed there. A bustling town would also be established in and around Fort Frederica which also grew to about 500 residents. This site would play a pivotal role in the War Of Jenkins Ear between the Spanish and British. Several small skirmishes would end a Spanish incursion and result in their retreat back to Florida.
