Wine-Searcher's Wine Director, David Allen MW, loves his Greek wines. Today he is tasting one of his favorite wines from The Agean island of Santorini. Domaine Sigalas' 2020 Assyrtiko.
Domaine Sigalas is a wine producer founded in 1991 on the Greek island of Santorini. It is best known for its white wines made from the Assyrtiko grape variety, particularly the crisp, citrussy stainless steel-fermented version.
The vineyards and winery are situated on the plains of Oia in the north of the island. Around 20 hectares (49 acres) are owned and farmed organically, and the company has long-term supply arrangements with numerous small local growers.
As with the rest of Santorini, the soils at Domaine Sigalas are a sandy mix of volcanic pumice and ash. The combination of warm Mediterranean climate, dry soil, and strong winds off the Aegean Sea means that traditional pruning systems are regularly used (in which the vines are trained into basket shapes or upright globes).
