The 1886 Benz MotorWagen automobile was produced by the Rheinische Gasmotorenfabrik Benz & Cie. aka Benz & Co. (known today as Mercedes-Benz). Karl & Bertha Benz and the company were located in Mannheim Germany. The vehicle was actually completed in 1885. But the patent process was completed in 1886 making it officially the first true automobile. This also makes "Mercedes Benz" the first official auto company in the world. The Motorwagon aka "patent Motorcar" was fueled by Ligroin or Petroleum Benzine. This is still a major component of modern gasoline. many components of the single cylinder engine were first time inventions. The Motor-wagon could reach speeds of 10 mph. Until this automobile the closest you could get was a converted horse-drawn carriage with some kind of engine attached to it. The Motorwagon & its engine were designed and built for the sole purpose of being an automobile.
Please do not try to bring tripods or other unauthorized filming equipment into the Museum. We appreciate the Museum giving us special permission get so near to such rare and valuable vehicles with our equipment. They have very good reasons to be protective of such incredible and rare cars.
