The popular demonstration of skewering balloons can be made more challenging by filling the balloons with water instead of air. This is a good summer experiment because it is very easy to get wet. This video also takes a look at skewering plastic bags, not quite as challenging until you decide to go larger. How large a bag can you use? How about 8 gallons of water in a trash bag or 25 gallons of water in a big plastic bag made for be mattresses. Either using balloons or bags can be a nice tie into learning about the basic structure and behavior of polymers, either rubber or plastic.
Special thanks to Doctor Andrea Flocken for volunteering to stand under the large trash bag filled with 8 gallons of water.
