La Pinta was one of the three ships used by Christopher Columbus in his attempt to find a westward passage to India and the riches of the East. Instead he discovered America! The Pinta (Spanish for “the painted one”) was a 3-masted caravel, about 15 metres long. The other ships were the Santa Maria, a carrack about 19 metres long, and the Nina, a caravel about 15 metres long. La Pinta was the fastest of the three ships. The fleet departed from Spain on August 3, 1492 and soon discovered San Salvador and Cuba. The Pinta deserted on November 21 seeking to find gold. On December 12 Columbus discovered Haiti, but the Santa Maria ran aground on Christmas night and sunk. In January the Pinta returned and the two caravels returned to Spain, arriving in Sevilla on March 31, 1493. Christopher Columbus was granted great honour as a Viceroy of the Spanish Court.
This model is based on the Pinta replica commissioned in 1892 by the Spanish government for the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s voyage. It was built from scratch based on a photo of the Pinta replica. There were no instructions or plans. The model was built by Ross Callaghan of Paraparaumu in 2018, and took 3 months to build.
