The strange unknown fact about Niagara Falls is that in 1969, the
American side of the falls was temporarily turned off by building a dam
across the Niagara River as part of an effort to study erosion and
buildup of rocks at the base of the falls. People were able to walk on
the riverbed and find lost souvenirs, and after the study was complete,
the dam was removed and the water flow was restored to its original
state. This event remains a fascinating piece of history.
