India is a country blessed with the monsoon season, unlike no other in the world. The two monsoon months of Shravana and Bhadrapada on the traditional Hindu calendar are time for prayers and celebrating nature and life. While every Monday is dedicated to the worship lord Shiva, every Friday is for goddess Lakshmi. She is worshiped as the goddess of wealth, abundance and prosperity.
The Friday before the full moon night in the month of Shravana is a special occasion to worship Lakshmi devi. Across the country, every devout household celebrates 'Varamahalakshmi Vratam'. By sunset oil lamps are lit outside the threshold of every home to welcome the goddess and invite auspiciousness. Resplendent in all her various incarnations as Adi Lakshmi, Shri Lakshmi, Vijaya Lakshmi, Veera Lakshmi, Santana Lakshmi and Vara Lakshmi, she blesses every devotee who surrenders to her.
The great Carnatic composer Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar dedicated his famous kriti 'Shree Varalakshmi Namastubhyam' to commemorate Shravana Shukravara. Here he highlights that worshiping the goddess on this particular day brings in special blessings.
Ashwath Narayanan renders this famous Kriti as an offering to the goddess.
