The first time we "tried out" this level was just after we completed R2C2, and the next time we properly got to play it was 40 days after that. Two of us even met up irl in the meantime. So yeah, scheduling to play this can be hard.
Talking about this level, I wanna say that at first I really liked it. It was fun to build up on the unique mechanic of pushing through fog with only repellers in order to find cells to lower the gas in the entire level, bit by bit.
HOWEVER....
As it is obvious in the 2nd to last try we had in this video that I got extremely mad at the level, I wanna take some time and explain why I felt that way:
The level starts very simple and gives you your objective to find the cells and lower the gas - this was a very fun system and the progression throughout the level felt very fun and rewarding as we saw the fog lower with every objective we completed. Maybe like 10 hours of active gameplay on this level alone in, we get to the end with 5/5 cells inserted and finish the main objective - which by now the game established was to get rid of the Fog entirely. In typical GTFO fashion, we expected an alarm sequence or an exfill to end it off fully. But, out of nowhere during the final alarm sequence the Fog starts rising back up - essentially ensuring that no matter how well-prepared we were, there was no way for us to beat that sequence without knowing beforehand that the gas would re-emerge. Perhaps if we were lucky and saved up on Fog Repellers we could have done it, but why would we keep any fog repellers since we literally just spent an hour and a half getting rid of the fog from the entire map?
That ending completely turned my view around on not just this level, but the whole game potentially. From a game design standpoint, if you give the players a mechanic and a goal to work with and then have them go through an already difficult enough level to complete that objective - it is not only unfair, but also completely bullsh*t to just decide to undo all of the player's work and give them a sequence that they are more than likely not going to beat the first time they do it. And that sequence had no way of being predicted - there is nothing in the level to indicate that the fog would come back. In fact, it's the complete opposite of what people would expect after getting rid of it.
And I f*cking hate that type of game design. My friends make the point of the fact that R1 and R2 are very early iterations of this game and therefor are very different Rundowns from the next - allegedly more badly balanced as well according to much of the GTFO community. But I just cannot accept that crap. I think that if you have found a good system to balance your levels past the first two Rundowns you have created, then you're supposed to go back and fix those as well. But I guess that's a whole other argument altogether.
Ever since the first level we did, we've been going in blind throughout our playthrough - that means no looking up what the next level will be and having an unfair advantage before we even dip our toes in it. That's, in my opinion, the proper way to play ANY game. But all this level did with its ending is p*ss me off and made all 4 of us waste another 2 hours redoing the level. And that's tempting me to look the levels up before I play them - which sucks.
I like difficulty in games, evident with the fact that I'm playing GTFO - but the bullsh*t this level sprung on us the last level wasn't difficulty - it was simply the developers saying "Oh you beat the level? Too bad, do it again." I cannot overstate how unrewarding it feels to bust your *ss fighting through a given objective, just to have the rug pulled from under your feet with something you can't beat unless you know happens beforehand (via looking it up online). I just really hope there aren't any more levels like this, but I'm not holding my breath on that.
Rant over. R2D2 coming soon, just have a lot of footage to edit through so it will take a while.
P.S. Blame Dimitri for the Thumbnail.
