The Coronation of Bokassa I as the Emperor of the Central African Empire took place on 4 December 1977 at a sports stadium in Bangui, the capital city. The only coronation in the history of that nation, the Central African Empire was a short-lived, self-proclaimed monarchy established in 1976 by Jean-Bédel Bokassa. The Empire existed for only 3 short years, ultimately being replaced by the Central African Republic in 1979. Bokassa's coronation copied many elements of the coronation of Emperor Napoleon of France, in 1804.
