(13 Sep 1976) In the Basque town of Fuenterrabia. a Spanish policeman shot a 24-year-old Basque worker on September 8th. Jesus Maria Zabala, was killed during a charge by police to disperse some 600 demonstrators taking part in an anti-government street protest. The spot where he died is marked with a makeshift wooden cross. Zabala's death sparked off a province-wide strike called by left-wing underground groups to protest the killing and to draw attention to violence used by the police and Guardia Civil to break up demonstrations and meetings. An estimated 90 per cent of factory workers came out on strike in the Basque capital, and there were several demonstrations in the city's streets.
