On the 15th February 2020 we attended the 'Landscapes of the Dead' conference at the Society of Antiquaries HQ, just off Piccadilly in London. It was organised by The Prehistoric Society, ([ Ссылка ]) of which we are members and it was a thrill to be attending on your behalf so we could report back from the coalface on the most up-to-date thinking in the archaeological world on prehistoric mortuary practice.
ABSTRACT: Neolithic mortuary practices in Britain have often been characterised by evidence from monumental sites. For the early Neolithic, human remains found in chambered tombs and causewayed enclosures have been used to paint a picture of collective burials often disarticulated and mixed. For the later Neolithic, collective cremation deposits from monuments feature heavily in accounts. This day event seeks to draw on new research to highlight other aspects of Neolithic ways of dealing with the dead. It will consider the growing body of evidence for mortuary practice beyond monuments, for example from single graves and caves. Speakers will consider areas such as the Isle of Man and NW Wales, alongside new interpretations of older data from monumental sites. Finally, new approaches such as archaeothanatology and isotope analysis can also reveal new data which can change the way we understand the burial record.
