Most people imagine the Sahara's undulating dunes, enormous mounds of shifting sand as far as the eye can view, when they hear the word "desert." This is what movies, television shows, and popular culture have taught us about deserts, but it is far from the complete picture. Yes, there is an unbelievable amount of sand in the world's deserts, raising the question of what is beneath the golden carpet, but in most regions of the desert, there is very little sand, allowing us to glimpse what lies beneath!
