India has issued a notice to Pakistan for modification of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) amid Islamabad's' "intransigence" on its implementation. The notice was sent on January 25 through respective commissioners for Indus waters, stressing that the neighbouring country's actions have adversely impinged on the provisions of the pact.
Indus water treaty was signed between India and Pakistan in 1960. It took nine years before the two countries agreed to sign on the dotted line. According to the treaty, India has been given the right to generate hydroelectricity through run-of-the-river projects on the western rivers subject to specific criteria for design and operation. The waters of western rivers - Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab - amounting to around 135 MAF annually have been assigned largely to Pakistan. Defence Expert, Maj Gen SB Asthana (retd) highlights that India doesn't have a treaty like this with China but has one with Pakistan, in spite of the many wars the two neighbours have fought. This in itself is an interesting note of details of the Indus Water Treaty. He also explains why India has issued a notice to Pakistan on this treaty
