Kenya Slips on Index Measuring Ease of Travel Due to New Visa Requirements | Firstpost Africa
Kenya plunged 17 places on the 2024 Africa Visa Openness Index to rank 46 out of 54 countries in the continent owing to the introduction of new electronic travel authorisation (ETA) requirements for most visitors to the country. The drop in the ranking was surprising as just last year President William Ruto announced the removal of visa requirements for all visitors, including those from Africa. The government introduced the ETA system to tackle the rising threat of terrorism in the country. However, it has been criticised for further layering the procedures and visa under another name. Cameroon and Algeria also shared the rank with Kenya. However, despite the ETA system, Kenya has seen a boom in the tourism industry in 2024. Yet, this has not improved Kenya’s rankings on the index. Will President Ruto scrap the ETA system? Watch the video to learn more.
