Malpe beach and St. Mary's Island

Malpe is a calm and beautiful beach in Uduppi district of Karnataka. It is known for its white smooth sand and turquoise blue water. It is situated 6km away from Uduppi. Water is shallow and tourist friendly.

From malpe beach one can take a 15 minutes (3 km distance) long boat ride to reach to St. Mary's Island (Coconut lsland/Thonsepar). Frequency of these boats may vary depending on the number of tourists visiting. Ticket charge for boating is 300 ₹ per person and a minimum of 10-12 members are required for the boat ride.

Boating timing: 9.30 am to 5.30 pm
(Evening is the best time to visit so that you can enjoy the beautiful sunset )

St. Mary's Island is known for its unique polygonal basaltic rocks and is one of the 32 National Geological Monuments in India and one of the 4 in karnataka.The island gives an amazing view of coconut trees, pillar rocks and the majestic arabian sea.The water is crystal clear and cold.

It is believed that Madagascar was a part of St. Mary's Island 88 million years ago and rifted apart later. First foot steps of Vasco da Gama in India was at St. Mary's Island before proceeding to Kappad beach of Calicut. He put a cross and named it as O Padrao de Santa Maria for Mother Mary and later known as St. Mary's Islands.
