Got neck pain or headaches? Here’s an amazing massage for the muscles at the base of your skull - the suboccipitals. These muscles can be poked, prodded, and massaged all you want, but if you do not get your head/neck in the right position first, the massage will be much less effective.
We have shown this massage before, but have not put emphasis on the importance of retracting the head and reaching the top of the head toward the ceiling. Doing so will lengthen the muscles that are drawn on the back of my neck and allow you to massage the muscles more easily.
If you get frequent headaches, it can be extremely helpful to massage these small “suboccipital” muscles. Make sure that you do not massage them too forcefully or for too long (around 2 minutes or less to start). Doing so can cause the headaches or neck pain to worsen. A lot of times people think that the harder you go, the faster your neck will feel better… that is not always the case. This applies to any other muscle in the body. It is important that when you are doing ANY kind of massage for any part of the body, that you are able to BREATHE and RELAX while doing it. If you cannot do either of those things, you may be making the problem worse as the muscles guard and contract tighter.
