All of those laptops had the same issue and different causes. They all shorted out the charger when plugged in and had been told by another repair shop that the motherboard needed to be replaced. But what were the causes? First was an Alienware 17 R4, and the cause had been a shorted MOSFET on CPU Vcore that powered the processor. Next was a Dell XPS 9520, which had a hole burned through the layers of the board; I couldn't fix that one. Moving on to another Alienware 17 R4, which had a shorted MOSFET on GPU vcore, powering the Nvidia graphic chip. The last was a Dell Precision 7720 with a cracked capacitor shorted on the main power rail.
These laptops had been mailed to my shop as a last resort because the customer knew that a bad motherboard did not always mean having to replace the motherboard.
