Fetus Ultrasound, Sonographic screening for Vasa Previa
Vasa previa is diagnosed when the umbilical vessels run through the fetal membranes not supported by the placental tissue or Wharton jelly and are close to the internal cervical os and below the presenting part of the fetus.
These vessels may rupture in labor or when spontaneous or artificial rupture of the membranes occurs, carrying a high risk of fetal death.
