NASA’s Parker Solar Probe has made history by venturing into the Sun’s outer atmosphere, the corona, on a groundbreaking mission to uncover the mysteries of our closest star. Flying at an incredible speed of 430,000 mph and enduring temperatures up to 1,800°F (982°C), the spacecraft is now the closest human-made object to ever approach a star.
Launched in 2018, the probe uses gravitational assists from Venus to inch closer to the Sun, with this latest flyby taking it within just 3.8 million miles of the Sun’s surface. Scientists eagerly await confirmation of its status after the flyby, expected on Friday.
The Parker Solar Probe has already provided fascinating insights, including close-up images of coronal streamers and data on the Sun’s atmosphere. Its Venus flybys have also allowed scientists to capture unprecedented images of the planet’s surface, revealing details through its dense clouds.
