If you like black technical slick rock chunk with a view and climbing, watch all eight (8) of my Constellation trail's videos: Hole In The Wall, North 40, Hully Gully, Ridgeback, Prescott Mountain Bike (PMB), Ham and Cheese, Rock Wall, and Lost Wall. For each mapped Constellation trail, I ride the complete trail out and back. Hence, you get the ENTIRE trail (both directions) in each Constellation trail(s) video. goMTB prescottAZ content comes from an INDIVIDUAL venture and is NOT associated with any other group, LLC, or local political MTB Alliance.
Off-road rock crawling; this is where off-road vehicles slowly navigate over technical and steep slick rock formations. Welcome to the Dells. Prescott Arizona’s mountain bike version of rock crawling. The Constellation trails are one of three Dells trail systems. The Constellation area gets its name in memorial from the February 28, 1959 Air Force crash of a Lockheed Super Constellation. All five crew members were killed. This is the location of that crash. There is a memorial and a collection of aircraft parts from the crash.
Lost Wall is one of the Constellation Trails. Like Rock Wall, it is an outside perimeter (west) trail. But unlike Rock Wall, Lost Wall shares the western outside perimeter trail with North 40. Hence it is not as long as Rock Wall. It is however MUCH steeper in most places. There's a pretty steep slab at the north end. And riding from the southern end bench (8:21) up to the high point bench (10:33) is a steep and loose challenge, especially on a hot day. Like all of Constellation trails, there's lots of hikers. Unlike Sedona or Moab, most of the Constellation trails have a fair amount of the typical loose over hard Prescott pea gravel type rock. Finding rear traction is the name of the game here. At each trail there are trail markers/maps. A few of the trails are vague where they start and end. Not a big deal as the area is small with only eight trails. There is a decent size parking lot just west of the Phippen Museum and the Hwy 89 roundabout. See link below for GPS. Parking is $3 or free every Wednesday. You can also access the Constellation trails from the R.J. trail at the south end.
A few general details about my ride(s) at the Constellation Trails: Death, taxes, and friendly hikers at Constellation. The Constellation area is an extremely popular hiking destination. It’s also fairly small as far as riding goes. There are eight individual trails and combined it is less than five miles. Given its size and popularity, you WILL encounter hikers while riding here. If you’ve watched any of my other Prescott riding videos you have seen that my intent is to give uninterrupted riding content. My goal here was to clean as much as possible in both directions. But getting video of cleaning a trail in either direction without hiker interference did prove to be a challenge on some trails here (YMMV). So, I rode the Constellation trails during the summer and mostly during the hottest time of the day to help lessen the likelihood of hiker encounters. I’m mentioning this to give some context to each of my Constellation trail videos; it was hot, dry and loose. Even with this (riding when hot), it still proved impossible to avoid the hikers at times. There is little to no shade here. I do not recommend riding this area in the summer time. It’s best ridden in the cooler months. You can hit it at sunrise, but the hikers will as well. You get the idea. As with all my trail videos, it is my plan to first ride and document each trail as mapped the best I can. It’s no different here. With these videos I’m not saying these are the best lines, the worst lines, or the only lines. Just the lines that were on the mapped trail or just off it for the most part. My rule of thumb was if a line was with the flow/direction of the mapped trail I went for it. I will likely do an alternate line video sometime in the future. With that, enjoy the chunk.
Have a SAFE ride! --goMTB prescottAZ.
