A transmission can be one of the most expensive components in a car to replace. Luckily, there are ways to care for your transmission and avoid a costly repair. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to check and add transmission fluid to your vehicle to ensure it properly shifts gears.

All you’ll need is a clean rag or a few paper towels, a long funnel, and transmission fluid. Check your owner’s manual to ensure you have the right type of fluid for your car.

Step 1: Park your vehicle and keep it running. It’s best to check transmission fluid when the engine is hot.

Step 2: Open your hood release and locate the transmission dipstick. It looks a lot like your oil dipstick. Check your owner’s manual if you are not sure where to locate your transmission dipstick.

Step 3: Remove the transmission dipstick and wipe it clean with your towel. Once cleaned, return it to the original position in the reservoir and remove it again to get a clear reading of the fluid. The level should appear within the hash marks. If the level is low, top off the reservoir with the appropriate transmission. Again, be sure to use the appropriate fluid for your vehicle according to the owner’s manual.

Step 4 (if you need to add fluid): Place the funnel in the tube that holds the transmission dipstick. Add a fluid slowly and re-check the level with the dipstick. You don’t want to overfill the transmission.

Step 5: Replace the dipstick and you’re good to go.
