This awful decision of the US Supreme Court upheld the right of states to impose "separate but equal" racial segregation laws, or Jim Crow laws, across society, in this case resulting in the separation of racial groups into separate train carriages. The "Jim Crow" era persisted until the 1950s, when it was overturned in Brown v Board of Education.
