A senior UN envoy has been forced to cut short his mission to Crimea after being told to leave by pro-Russian groups.

Robert Serry took refuge in a cafe after reportedly being threatened by men wearing civilian clothing, at least one of whom was allegedly armed, according to a conversation had between an ITN journalist and Serry's aide.

A mob waited for him outside chanting Crimea is Russian.

Serry was eventually escorted to the airport and has since flown to Istanbul .
