Of course what happens now with the war, launched by Russia against Ukraine is a terrible tragedy for the European continent, for Ukraine, and of course for Moldova. We in Moldova are Ukraine's most fragile neighbour. There are a lot of refugees, some 360,000 refugees escape from Ukraine to Moldova, and then many of them moved on to the European Union. For now we have 100,000 refugees from Ukraine which represents 4% of our population.

That's quite a huge number and that is having a big impact on the socio economic situation in Moldova and the humanitarian situation in Moldova, so one of the key and most urgent matters for Moldova is to get more assistance in managing this refugee crisis, this humanitarian catastrophe, it is affecting all of us. So this is one of the key points. The most urgent is to help Moldova withstand the regional shock of the war. At the same time as you know, Moldova, along with Ukraine and Georgia has recently applied to become an EU member.
We, in Moldova believe that we are a European country with a European political system, with a European history, European language, European Society and our place is in the European Union. We're determined to continue all the reforms that are needed to bring us into the European Union, so that's a key objective for my meeting for my visit to Brussels today.
We in Moldova are in touch with our friends and with my counterparts in Georgia and Ukraine, we coordinate our actions. Of course, what happens in Ukraine is very tragic, but we all understand that the future of our countries is in the European Union; it is the best way to ensure peace, stability, security and the prosperity of our citizens. This is what we believe in Moldova.

Absolutely we do believe that this is something which we have been promoting for a long time, the accession to the European Union. But in Moldova we're also very conscious that we need to perform and reform our country, continue the consolidations of our institutions of our economy, of our political system so that Moldova can become a credible EU accession candidate.
