Although Gorontalo is famous for its pristine coral reefs, it also features sandy areas that host unusual species like Sacoglossans. At first glance, divers may mistake these sea slugs for nudibranchs. However, Sacoglossans lack the rhinophores and external gills that define nudibranchs. They are also vegetarian, biting into algae and sucking out the sap. This behavior earns them the nickname "sap-sucking sea slugs."
The first Sacoglossan in the video is Elysia expansa. Its name comes from its expanded twin side flaps. Without a shell, it cleverly disguises itself as a piece of vegetation. Watch how it rocks like a drifting leaf.
The second Sacoglossan, Oxynoe viridis, carries a small white shell hidden beneath its side flaps. It may look like a simple slug, but its unique traits make it fascinating to observe.
Gorontalo’s southern coastline borders Tomini Bay, which plunges to depths of four kilometers. These waters host spectacular marine life, from whale sharks to Salvador Dali sponges. Gorontalo also boasts excellent muck diving sites where curious critters like sap-sucking sea slugs thrive.
Known as Indonesia’s hidden paradise, Gorontalo features pristine coral reefs, rare sponges, and deep blue waters. These wonders make Gorontalo a top destination for scuba diving, underwater photography, and videography.
