(14 Jun 2018) A Hungarian court has sentenced four human traffickers to 25 years in prison each for their role in the 2015 case in which 71 migrants, including four children, suffocated to death in the back of a refrigerated truck found on an Austrian highway.
All the defendants appealed through their defence lawyers, while the prosecutor said the sentence is too mild.
The principal defendant, an Afghan man, referred to as L.S., and three Bulgarian accomplices were found guilty on Thursday in the southern city of Kecskemet of being part of a criminal organisation and committing multiple crimes.
Ten other defendants, three of them still fugitives, were given shorter prison terms.
