A radical-right Polish MP has put out a menorah in parliament with a fire extinguisher in an act described as “disgraceful” by the country’s new prime minister.
Grzegorz Braun, 56, the leader of a monarchist micro party, marched up to a candelabrum marking the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah and doused it in full view of dozens of observers before launching into an antisemitic tirade on the chamber’s debating floor.
The uproar capped a turbulent 24 hours as the right-wing Law and Justice party that had governed Poland for eight years lost its final attempt to cling on to power and Donald Tusk returned as prime minister, vowing to make his country a leading force in the European Union.
